2017-18 School Year

“I would not waste my life in friction when it could be turned into momentum” Frances WIllard

Hello everyone, the 2017-18 school year seems like it’s going at a record pace. I can’t believe this is my ninth year at Riverside. It has been quite a journey. We have been able to accomplish several things in the past few years. We would not have been able to do any of it without the support of the Riverside community. For example, the PTO, Athletic Boosters and the Music Boosters provide so much support, both financially and in volunteer work. We appreciate everything they do for the school. If you are interested in joining or helping one of these groups, check our school calendar for the next scheduled meeting.

It seems like yesterday that we were having our open house and community picnic.  Open house saw the highest attendance in a long time. In athletics, the golf and cross county teams competed hard and had quite a bit of progress. Dana Jones made the district golf tournament for the second year in a row. Friday nights are always special, the football team and the marching band put on quite a show. What an atmosphere. The football team had a successful year making the playoffs for the third time in four years. The biggest fall sporting accomplishment was the Lady Pirate volleyball team. They finished the year with 20 wins, a sectional championship and finished the year as district runner up. Very proud of all the teams and how they represented Riverside.

The administrative team consisting of Mason Bryan, Kelly Kauffman, and Pam Gibson is dedicated to providing a safe learning environment for our students. Mason Bryan, our PK-6 principal, has been serving our district for twelve years. Kelly Kauffman, is in her fourth year as 7-12 Principal after an eleven year teaching stint, all with the district. Pam Gibson will serve as our Special Education Coordinator. Pam will be on campus Tuesday-Wednesday of each week. In addition to those listed above, Jason Bell serves as our Operations Manager and Ronnie Fitchpatrick serves as our district treasurer. As an administrative team, we strive to put the students first in all decisions regarding our district.

Riverside is also pleased to welcome nine new teachers this year.

Ms. Amy Pleiman                   6th grade Math

Ms. Lauren Otting                 5th grade Math

Ms. Ellie Johnson                  Intervention Specialist

Ms. Abby Coggins                 Elementary Music

Ms. Erin Krisher                    Kindergarten

Ms. Molli Bell                         Preschool

Ms. Becky Lentz                     Middle School Science

Mr. Kyle Hurley                     High School Math

Mr. Spencer Saunders            High School Social Studies

We believe they will be a major part of Riverside for years to come.

There are so many exciting things happening in the district. For example, in the last two years we have went to a 1-1 ratio for chrome books in the high school. Moreover, we have a cart of chrome books in every classroom down to third grade and have computer carts for each grade level k-2.  We have invested in new Reading and Math textbooks for the k-8 grade levels. We were the only school in our region to receive the K-3 Literacy Grant which provides in depth training for our teachers. In addition, the last two years the Board of Education has waived all educational and athletic fees. Furthermore, I can’t thank the Logan County Sheriff’s Department for their partnership. We are able to provide a resource officer every day for the safety of our students and staff. Through our partnership with Ohio Hi-Point we are able to provide top notch career tech programs without the student’s ever leaving campus. The four programs are Vo-Ag, Business, Advanced Manufacturing and Media Arts. Furthermore, the students are able to compete through their local chapters. Our Business Professionals Organization (BPA) is most definitely one of the best in the entire country. The biggest addition for 17-18 school year is our pre-school program. We are able to provide a tuition free program to our community and have 30 students signed up for the very first year. These numbers are split with 15 students in the morning session and 15 students in the afternoon session. I fully expect the program to grow very fast. So if you have a student that you feel will be interested in attending next year be on the lookout for announcements in the second half of the year to get signed up.

Although it’s nice to look at accomplishments, the number one asset at Riverside Local Schools is our students. I am amazed daily with how our students are ready and willing to step up and help. Whether it be a community service project or helping a family in need. I know that our students have a servant heart. For example, the Pirate Advisory Committee and Interact combined efforts to team up with the Village of DeGraff to paint one of the community park shelter house and picnic tables. Another example is that our student body rallied around a student and their family that experienced a major medical trauma. The students ran a fund raiser and raised over $1300.00 dollars to go towards the families medical bills. Every year our youth leadership team runs a dodgeball tournament that raises over $1000.00 and they donate it to an organization or a family in need. It’s truly amazing to have a front row seat to watch the wonderful things our students do every day.

Finally, I want to thank the parents who work to make sure their students have the best opportunities. I know and appreciate how Riverside parents are willing to ensure their students have what they need. Your dedication to your student’s future make our job much easier.

Thank you to everyone who helps make Riverside Local Schools a great place!!
