Gifted Services

IDENTIFICATION OF GIFTED STUDENTS

Welcome Riverside Local Schools’ Gifted Services page. Our district strives to offer a continuum of services which will provide positive yet challenging growth opportunities for all of our students. According to the Ohio Content Standards provided by the Ohio Department of Education, “…students who can exceed the grade-level indicators and benchmarks set forth in the standards must be afforded the opportunity [to advance] and be encouraged to do so.” Our district aims to provide every such opportunity for our students to succeed: your awareness of your student’s needs is key to this success!

Riverside Local uses a three-stage approach to screen and identify students in these areas: superior cognitive ability, specific academic abilities, creative thinking, and visual / performing arts. A teacher, parent, or other professional can always refer a student for gifted screening; whole-grade screenings occur during elementary school as well. A brochure outlining the multi-stage procedures, criteria, and assessment instruments is available upon request in the school office.

This website (annual) notification occurs in accordance with the Riverside Local School District Policy and Plan for the Identification of Children Who Are Gifted (available upon request as well). In Ohio, the term “Gifted” refers to, “students who perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment and who are identified following the procedures and criteria established by the Ohio Revised Code, Section 3324.03” (ORC, 2008). In Ohio, this identification process must include objective forms of screening, including testing and professional evaluations, in order to ensure that all students receive fair treatment under the law.

Parents, staff members, or members who wish to learn more about Riverside’s gifted services or gifted education in general are encouraged to contact the Director of Student Achievement, Erica Baer, at (937) 498-1355 or email at: ebaer@mresc.org.
